The former Bavaria star Arjen Robben has searched for a new athletic challenge after the end of his football career and went his first marathon in Rotterdam.
The 38-year-old came to the finish at the 41st edition after 3:13:57 hours. The victory over the 42.195 kilometers through the south-leaving port city secured the Olympia second of Tokyo, Abdi nageeye. The 33-year-old Netherlands with Somali roots set a Dutch record in 2:04:56 hours.
"It was not fun, it was really not fun," Robben said to the Rijnmond regional station after the finish with cramps in the legs. "I did it, but that was already. That was a real fight." The former Dutch international ran the route together with the former ice-speed world champion heiren Wenemars as a motivator at his side: "In the beginning I was a bit busy with time, but sometime you throw overboard. Then you survive. But I have it survived made."
Wennemars (46), an already experienced runner, said, Robben had "courageously" conducted: "It's a long way, 42 kilometers. In between, he has broken into a little bit. But it's fantastic that he managed to do it."
